Michael Williams Tracing Don Holleder

Excel MVP Michael Williams remembering the lessons he learned at Excel. In speaking about “Being A Great Teammate,” Coach Allocco gave tribute to Donald Holleder, an All-American wide receiver at Army in 1954. Holleder was one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy in 1955, but without an experienced quarterback, his coach, Earl Red Blaik, asked him to switch positions to wide receiver. This sacrifice cost him the Heisman candidate year but Holleder was committed to doing what was best for the good of the team. In 1967 Major Donald Holleder, observing a battle from a helicopter in Vietnam, noticed that the entire command unit on the ground had been killed and the remaining men were in serious trouble. Holleder told the pilot to quickly land the helicopter. He then organized a rescue effort, but sprinted ahead of them to the embattered battle site. He was gunned down and killed by sniper fire but his men escaped to safety. “On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields, will bear the fruits of victory."

Michael is respectfully tracing Donald C. Holleder’s name…..
